Accommodations Theater for Youth

Main Street Theater is committed to ensuring that our productions are accessible to ALL children. Accessible performances include Audio Description and Support, American Sign Language and Sensory-Friendly performances.

Sensory-Friendly Performances

These Sensory-Friendly performances will provide children and their families an opportunity to attend a performance modified to meet sensory needs giving access to live theater to ALL children.

Each performance offered as Sensory-Friendly will incorporate the following changes:

  • Increased lighting in the house/seats throughout the performance
  • Lower sound levels
  • Additional trained staff on hand to provide patrons with assistance when needed
  • Electronic devices such as tablets or smart phones may be used throughout the performance with headphones
  • Prompt books for family members to prepare for the show
  • Fidget toys are welcome
  • A quiet room is provided except where an asterisk (*) is listed

Accessibility for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

The theater is equipped with Listen Technologies to help patrons who require additional audio support in performances. Patrons can request use of an assisted hearing device. They will be given a receiver with three options for earphones:

The device will have a lanyard to which the patrons can wrap around their neck so they don't have to hold it during the performance. Each device has adjustable volume control.

You will need to have a valid ID, driver’s license, or credit card when borrowing a unit. Units are available at both public and school performances.

Sign Language Interpretation

Sign language interpretation is scheduled for select Main Street Theater performances throughout the season. ASL performances for the 2018-2019 season are:

R. L. Stine's Goosebumps: Phantom of the Auditorium – Saturday, May 4 at 11am

Accessibility for the Blind or Patrons who have Low Vision

Audio description is scheduled for select Main Street Theater performances throughout the season. Using a single earpiece connected to an infrared headset, patrons who are blind or have low vision can listen to trained audio describers give live, verbal descriptions of actions, costumes, scenery, and other visual elements of a performance.

Audio described performances for the 2018-2019 season are:

Jackie and Me – Sunday, February 10 at 2:30pm

Schoolhouse Rock Live! – Monday, March 11 at 2pm

R. L. Stine's Goosebumps: Phantom of the Auditorium – Saturday, April 27 at 2pm

Accessible Drop-off & Seating

Disabled drop off can be accommodated on the Travis side of the building before and after performances.

The theater has wheelchair- and scooter-accessible locations where patrons can remain in their wheelchairs or transfer to theater seats. Patrons who cannot or do not wish to transfer from their wheelchairs to a theater seat should request wheelchair-accessible locations when ordering tickets.
